Beck Anxiety Inventory (BAI)

Twenty-one common anxiety symptoms rated by how much they bothered you during the past month, including today.

Method and research sources

What BAI measures

BAI measures the severity of 21 anxiety symptoms, with particular sensitivity to bodily and panic-like experiences. It describes recent symptom burden rather than explaining its cause.

How scoring works

Each answer contributes 0–3 points. The 21 answers are summed into a total from 0 to 63 and grouped into four conventional symptom ranges.

Questions about BAI

Does a high score mean I have an anxiety disorder?

No. It shows symptom intensity on this questionnaire; diagnosis requires a broader professional assessment.

Could physical illness affect the score?

Yes. Several BAI items are physical, so health conditions and medication effects can raise the total.

What period should I consider?

Rate the past month, including today, using the response that best describes how much each symptom bothered you.
