Social Phobia Inventory (SPIN)

Seventeen questions about fear, avoidance, and physical discomfort in social or performance situations during the past week.

Method and research sources

What SPIN measures

SPIN is a self-report measure of three clinically relevant aspects of social anxiety: fear, avoidance, and physiological arousal. It asks about the past week.

How scoring works

Each item is scored from 0 to 4 and all 17 are summed to 0–68. Higher totals indicate greater reported symptom burden during the past week.

Questions about SPIN

Does 19 mean I have social anxiety disorder?

No. It is a screening boundary from one study; diagnosis requires a broader assessment of fear, avoidance, duration, impairment, and alternatives.

Can I score low but still struggle with public speaking?

Yes. A focused performance fear can be important without raising the total across many social situations.

Should I force myself into feared situations?

Not abruptly. Gradual, planned practice with attention to safety and learning is different from overwhelming yourself.
