What BDI-II measures

BDI-II is a 21-item self-report inventory for the severity of depressive symptoms in adolescents and adults. It covers emotional, cognitive, motivational, and physical experiences.

How scoring works

Each group contributes 0–3 points. The 21 ratings are summed into a total from 0 to 63 and compared with four conventional severity ranges.

Questions about BDI-II

Does the result diagnose depression?

No. It summarises self-reported symptoms and cannot replace a clinical assessment.

What if only one symptom is severe?

Individual symptoms still matter even when the total is low, especially suicidal thoughts or major changes in functioning.

What period should I consider?

Choose the statement that best describes the past two weeks, including today.
