Alcohol-related risk: AUDIT

Ten questions about alcohol use and its consequences. This is a screening tool, not a diagnosis. You may stop at any time.

Method and research sources

What AUDIT measures

AUDIT is a WHO-developed questionnaire covering consumption, possible dependence symptoms and alcohol-related harm. This page uses the full 2001 self-report form with 10 g standard drinks and a six-drink threshold in item 3.

How scoring works

Items 1–8 contribute 0–4 each; items 9–10 contribute 0, 2 or 4. Sum: 0–40. Screening ranges are 0–7, 8–15, 16–19 and 20–40. There is no reverse scoring.

Method and sources

The WHO manual and original development study define this version and scoring; the Russian validation is listed for context.

About AUDIT

Is a score below 8 proof that drinking is safe?

No. This is a screening range, not a safe limit. Your circumstances and individual answers matter.

Why can I score points without recent drinking?

Items 9–10 also cover earlier injuries and concern from others; those answers contribute two points each.
