Insomnia Severity Index (ISI)

Seven questions about nighttime sleep difficulty and its daytime impact during the past two weeks.

Method and research sources

What ISI measures

ISI covers difficulty falling asleep, staying asleep, early waking, satisfaction, noticeability, distress, and interference with daytime functioning.

How scoring works

Each of seven responses contributes 0–4 points. The total ranges from 0 to 28 and is compared with four conventional severity ranges.

Questions about ISI

Does a score of 15 diagnose insomnia?

No. It marks a conventional severity range; diagnosis requires a broader assessment.

Should I count one bad night?

Rate the overall pattern during the past two weeks rather than only the best or worst night.

Can medication or illness affect the result?

Yes. Medicines, pain, breathing problems, mood, schedules, and other conditions can influence sleep and the score.
